BIOGRAPHY
Doug Winter is a photographic artist, filmmaker,
printmaker, and educator based in Elk Grove, California. Living with visual snow symptoms and vision loss in his right eye after a stroke that permanently changed his field of vision, he alters the camera in response to unstable vision and the uncertainty of memory. Using modified lenses and sensors, aged glass, and degraded film, he tests how color is perceived, how memory is reconstructed, and where photographic truth begins to fail. His accessible, place-responsive projects are grounded in consent and shared acts of looking and remembering.
Winter received a $10,000 Seeding Creativity grant funded by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2023 and was a semifinalist for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s 2025 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. His Arte Laguna Prize selections led to exhibitions in Venice and Shanghai and a fully funded one-month residency at Hong Museum in China. Institutional collections include MoCA Cultural Association, Hong Museum, and the National Steinbeck Center. He is an adjunct professor of photography in the Los Rios Community College District, leads an annual workshop in Yosemite National Park, and will resume his artist residency at KALA Art Institute in spring 2027.
